Contractor acquisition models explained

Buying leads and receiving scoped work are not the same model.

Lead platforms can create immediate inquiry volume. OttoServ takes a different path: organize the project first, then route it selectively when trade, service area, capacity, and fit line up. Each approach has advantages and tradeoffs.

Model-by-model comparison

Lead products vary. Always review the specific platform's current agreement, billing trigger, distribution policy, refund rules, and cancellation terms.

DimensionBuying leadsOttoServ Local Pro Network
What the pro pays forAn inquiry, contact, message, or other opportunity defined by the platform. A booked job is usually not guaranteed. No lead fee to receive or review a routed OttoServ opportunity. Joining the network does not guarantee job volume.
VolumeCan provide faster or broader inquiry volume when budget and market coverage are available.Selective and dependent on homeowner demand, service area, project fit, and current network operations.
CompetitionSome platforms allow or encourage a homeowner to contact multiple businesses. Distribution rules differ by provider and product.OttoServ is designed to route organized work selectively rather than resell the same contact as a lead to a crowd.
Project detailRanges from a short request to a detailed questionnaire, depending on the platform and homeowner. The intake can include plain-language descriptions, voice, photos, files, rough measurements, and follow-up questions.
Sales workloadThe pro usually must qualify the inquiry, respond quickly, diagnose fit, schedule an estimate, and compete for the work. The project is organized before routing, but the pro still reviews the scope, confirms fit, prices the work, and agrees on terms.
Best fitBusinesses prepared to buy inquiry volume, respond rapidly, track acquisition economics, and tolerate variable lead quality.Pros who prefer selective, organized opportunities and accept that there is no promise of constant or immediate work.

Buying leads may be a better fit when

You need broader opportunity volume now.

  • You have a measured marketing budget and know your acceptable acquisition cost.
  • Your office can respond quickly, qualify inquiries, and follow up consistently.
  • Your close rate and gross margin can absorb variable lead quality.
  • You want access to markets where a curated network has limited coverage.

OttoServ may be a better fit when

You would rather review organized work than buy contact records.

  • You do not want to pay each time a potential customer inquiry is delivered.
  • You value photos, voice notes, files, measurements, and project context before review.
  • You prefer selective opportunities aligned to trade, radius, capacity, and fit.
  • You accept that a curated network does not promise constant or immediate work.

Evaluate the channel, not just the advertised lead price

Billing trigger

What exact event creates a charge: delivery, message, response, appointment, or booking?

Distribution

Can the same homeowner contact multiple pros, and can that rule vary by product or user choice?

Qualification

What project details are collected before the opportunity reaches your team?

Refund and credit rules

What situations qualify, what is the reporting window, and is the remedy cash or account credit?

Sales labor

How much staff time is required to respond, qualify, estimate, follow up, and close?

Actual economics

Track total spend, contact rate, appointments, closed jobs, gross profit, refunds, and staff time.

Common questions

Is buying a lead the same as buying a job?

Usually not. A lead product commonly provides an inquiry or contact opportunity. The contractor still has to qualify, sell, price, and win the job under the platform's current terms.

Does OttoServ charge Local Pro Network members per lead?

No. OttoServ publicly positions the Local Pro Network with no lead fees and no lead buying. That does not mean every applicant is approved or that approved pros receive guaranteed work.

Does pre-scoped mean the final price is already approved?

No. Submitted details can improve the starting point, but the pro must review the project, confirm the scope, and provide or approve final pricing and terms before work begins.

Which approach is better for a new contractor?

It depends on cash, sales capacity, service area, response speed, margins, and tolerance for uncertainty. Buying leads may create faster opportunity volume; a curated network may reduce upfront lead-buying risk but cannot promise volume.

Review the network without buying a lead.

Apply for free and describe your trade, service area, capacity, and work. OttoServ reviews each application and does not promise approval or job volume.
